Partnered Up

Mission: Episode 14 - Synthesis
Location: de Planca House, Javelin City
Timeline: Day 1 at 1539

As soon as Kayla got over to Elizabeth's house she dropped her baggage onto the floor. "All right," She said while waving the paper in her hand, "It looks like we're partners for this science fair." She leaned against the wall of the house after having been let inside.

"Any ideas?" She asked. "Because I've got nothing..."

Elizabeth had nothing either, "I don't know." She walked over to the replicator and produced some hot tea. "It was a bit of a surprise to learn that we had to do this in the first place." She looked over at her friend, "Want anything?"

Kayla looked over Elizabeth's shoulder at the replicator for a brief moment, "Same thing you're having maybe?" She asked.

Elizabeth took the replicated dark brown mug out of the replicator before ordering the next mug of hot tea. She carried both drinks over to the table and placed them on top of it. "All right," She said while taking a seat. "We have hot tea and a PADD." She grabbed the PADD from next to her before making herself comfortable.

"Now, I suppose we should consider brainstorming ideas?" Elizabeth asked.

Kayla came over and made herself comfortable in the chair before grabbing her own datapad. "I wonder what sorts of things we could possibly be allowed to do. What were you thinking about studying at Starfleet Academy?"

Elizabeth didn't even know if that was going to be possible anymore. They were thousands of light years from home without a way to get back. Or, rather that distance from Earth anyway. "I was still undecided," Elizabeth admitted. "I know it was something in the sciences.

"But, I hadn't really decided on any sort of specialization," Elizabeth said. "Were you thinking about Starfleet Academy?"

Kayla nodded, "I was thinking about it. After my father died I sort of lost interest in that. Now, I guess we have to figure something else out unless Starfleet has plans." She looked at the blank screen in front of her. "What if we did something relating to the planetary system we're in?"

Elizabeth slid up a little bit, "What do you have in mind?"

Kayla shrugged her shoulders. "We could do some sort of survey in the system. I know Starfleet exploration efforts are less than ten percent complete. We could see about borrowing a runabout or something maybe?"

Elizabeth laughed a little bit, "I don't think our parents would go along with that idea. I'm not entirely sure we could convince them to even let us leave the planet right now. But, what are you thinking?"

Kayla had the stylus in her hand tapping her bottom lip with it. "There are two asteroid fields here. We could see about using the runabout to survey one of the larger asteroids in the field. I don't think we should leave the runabout or craft we use though.

"That's also assuming that you can fly a runabout?" Kayla asked.

Elizabeth was looking at Kayla carefully, "Yeah, I can pilot a runabout. My father taught me how a month ago. He actually taught my sister how to pilot one too and told us it was just in case we ever needed to. But, again I don't know if we could talk them into letting us."

Kayla shrugged again. "I don't think it would hurt anything to try and ask them. But, we probably should come up with a backup plan of some sort. Maybe we could use the long range telescope system to do it if they won't let us fly."

"That's possible," Elizabeth said. "Our parents would probably crap a really large brick if we asked about piloting a runabout though. Maybe we can get them to let us take a shuttle instead?"

Kayla was still running the stylus across her bottom lip, "I don't know." She said, "I feel like we may need the runabout because we'd want space if we have to stay overnight on it."

"There's space on a shuttle," Elizabeth told her. "And, if it's only for one night it shouldn't be a problem. I think a shuttle would be an easier sell anyway because I know they runabouts are seeing regular use."

"All right that's fair I guess," Kayla said and wrote down the idea. "What if we did a survey here on the planet. We could study the life patterns of one of the animals that live here. There are a number of species that haven't really been researched a lot."

Elizabeth liked that suggestion, "That would be easier to sell to my parents I think." She said. "And I think your Mom would be more willing to go along with that suggestion too. I just don't think they are going to want us piloting space craft right now..." Her voice trailed away as she imagined the conversation she would have.

Her mother would probably not be impressed with the idea at all especially if it were to be unsupervised by their parents. Too many things could go wrong with that and Elizabeth knew it would be brought up. "All right," She said. "I would underline that one.

"A couple days worth a camping trip to one of the forests to survey some of the life that live there. We could go to the rainforest in the south for example," She added.

Kayla marked that suggestion with a star next to it, "Maybe we could see if some of the other girls want to go with us. They could survey something else so we have different projects?"

Elizabeth shook her head, "Nah, I say we just do it ourselves instead. We can tell them that's our planned project though so that they know why we are camping just the two of us."

Kayla laughed a little bit, "Yeah, I guess we don't want rumors like the Riley and you thing do we?" She asked rhetorically.

"Right," Elizabeth told her. "Rose and I finally have gotten past that. Though, we didn't really argue too much and all of us had a great conversation after that anyway. So, the southern rainforest area?"

"Yeah," Kayla said. She erased the other idea entirely, "We just need to make sure it's okay then we can tell the others of our plans. Then I guess get the camping gear and a communicator?" She asked.

Elizabeth nodded, "Yeah we'll need a few things. And, we need a portable replication system. And, some other gear too."

"Agreed," Kayla said as she started to compile a list. Once she had everything she thought they would need she felt satisfied. They had somehow made some progress. And, it still wasn't dinner time yet.
